How to Become a Resilient Leader

March 16, 2021

In today’s age, being resilient is a crucial skill to possess in order to balance between your professional and personal life.

Unfortunately, many leaders lack this skill, which places them in a vulnerable position and increases the risk of poor management, mental breakdowns, and burnout.

In this article, we will cover the most important steps to become a resilient leader and how you achieve your goals.

Becoming a resilient leader

1. Communicate more efficiently

During times of stress, it is indispensable to communicate with your team members and avoid acting impulsively.

For better communication skills, follow the Communication Based Leadership philosophy, coined by Cliff W. Gilmore of North of Center.

It states that:

  • The human capacity to communicate is finite
  • Leadership is all about relationships with others
  • To succeed as a leader, trust is a must
  • Everything is a communication activity

2. Build positive relationships

Building positive relationships with your team will generate trust in the workplace, which is s vital thing to have in order to succeed.

Resiliency also means having others move in the same direction as yourself. Of course, you cannot force them to do so, as it’s all about seeing eye to eye.

The best way to achieve this point is by developing other leaders in your workplace.

3. Be receptive to coaching

A key point to becoming resilient is by accepting to change your behavior when necessary. You need to listen to the feedback of your team members, change your mindset, transform, and improve.

If you don’t have a growth mindset, you can use coaching to improve yourself. Learning from others and being open to feedback are also necessary skills to becoming a resilient leader.

4. Take bold decisions

Taking bold risks and not being afraid of trying new things are traits of a resilient leader.

In general, taking risks during times of stability is not as important as when things are turbulent. A leader should not be afraid to take bold risks when there is not much time to think about the matter.

Obviously, this does not mean to be reckless; you just have to be willing to make difficult decisions when others aren’t.

5. Do not resist change

Along the lines of taking bold risks, you also need to accept change and make it happen.

This is not exclusive to accepting change. You need to ensure that your team members are changing as well.

In many cases, change is difficult as it takes courage and vision to accept the new goals of the company. However, resilient leaders embrace change and help others move with them toward the next goal.
